CHARACTER
Name: Rosalind Lutece
True Name: R. Lutece
Canon: Bioshock Infinite. (Post Game.)
Age: A vague handwave toward the early 40's.1
History: Bioshock Wiki
Powers/Abilities: Rosalind has two predominant fonts of power/ability.
Genius - Rosalind is stunningly intelligent and resourceful. She has written multiple books on quantum mechanics, build bridges between universes, has made a city float indefinitely, and has brought a multiverse variant of herself through to her own reality. She did all of this several decades before the advent of electronics. After her death 2 she used technology from alternate realities to formulate elixirs capable of imbuing the test subject patient main character people who drink it with a magnetic field strong enough to reflect bullets.
Unfortunately, she is largely morally bankrupt. While she doesn't kill people intentionally, she is not opposed to people dying or suffering as a result of her actions or inventions.
Quantum Superposition - The curious nature of her murder resulted in Rosalind (and her "brother" 3) being forced out of linear space-time and into a quantum superposition. She became impervious to damage, able to vanish abruptly as they stepped between realities, and untethered from time. But, since she's gone and paradoxed herself out of existence, technically, that's all gone to pot. Now she's on a cruise ship.
Rosalind is no longer entirely untethered from linear time, but she still occupies a quantum superposition. This is troublesome because she will be extremely unstable.
Ghostly images of herself will persist, appearing on occasion and branching out from her as she makes decisions. While this spooky ambiance is disconcerting, the deeply inconvenient side effect of these ghosts will be passive, uncontrolled phasing. She will no longer have the ability to choose what she's doing when she teleports from place to place, but will be thrown into one of her ghostly copies at random. Each collapse of her previous superposition will result in headaches and/or nosebleeds as the two versions reconcile. She will not be impervious to bullets or any sort of damage, but injuries sustained by one variant may take a moment to catch up if she is phasing when they happen.
She will also suffer from a generally alarming lack of atomic cohesion. On the plus side, she can walk through things occasionally. On the downside, it is very hard to reliably carry delicate things.4
Inventory: Her clothing (corset, stockings, garters, shoes, chemise, corset cover, underthings, underskirt, skirt, shirt, jacket, tie, vest, several hairpins, etc), a silver eagle coin, and a handkerchief.
Job History:
Fellow of Quantum Mechanics Academic Study (Former) - One of several state funded academics studying the structure and properties of atoms. Discovered the process by which to suspend atoms indefinitely in space through entanglement, dubbed "quantum levitation" by philistines. Known as the Lutece Field in all respectable records.
Chair of the Columbia Science Authority (Former) - Principal researcher and administrator for the Columbia Science Authority, as instated by the Prophet Zachary Comstock. In charge of all new construction, the study of inter-dimensional tears, and quarantine procedures regarding Elizabeth "The Lamb" Comstock. Holds a number of patents.
A list of scientific publications made during this period are available upon request.
Freelance Samaritan, Apparently (Current) - Personally charged with recording multi-dimensional variables and constants as well as conducting the subsequent calculations necessary to undo previous multi-dimensional timeline contamination. Unpaid.
Suppressions:
The Weaker Sex - Rosalind is quite opposed to indulging in any behavior that might be construed as overtly feminine. This is largely due to her desire to be taken seriously and the fact that she was born in the 1880s. It did not help that she then found employment with an ethno-nationalist pseudo-christian doomsday cult.
Prideful - Because she is often dismissed due to her gender, Rosalind is extremely proud and stubborn. She is excruciatingly reluctant to admit she was wrong.
Lonely - Rosalind is extremely lonely. Due to the circumstances of her life, she was unable to really indulge in relationships and found few peers she could tolerate. She has resigned herself to loneliness, or had, until she found her "brother".
Desperate - Rosalind's only real relationship is with her "brother" and she values it so much that she's willing to spend (presumably) hundreds of years traipsing through time and space to undo a mistake he feels guilty about. She does this simply because he threatened to leave her alone. In her professional life, she was willing to work for a racist religious zealot simply because the opportunities were more agreeable. She makes questionable choices to defend what she has and bad choices to acquire more of what she desires.
Greatest Fear: More than anything, she is terrified that she will lose her "brother." Second to that, she is terrified that she will lose all of her academic renown.
Greatest Desire: To exist wherever Robert does or, failing that, to build a contraption capable of locating him or a variant of him, again. Beyond that, she greatly desires accolade and recognition and is fully willing to engage in an amoral fashion to achieve that goal.
Greatest Regret: Agreeing to work for the aforementioned racist religious zealot. (The atrocities committed while working for him--i.e. kidnapping a baby and inadvertently maiming it, raining fire on "the Sodom below", enabling Fink to introduce dangerous genetic splicing to a city of cultists--are mild regrets but largely incidental. Working for Comstock, in and of itself, is an embarrassing mark that shows exceedingly poor judgment on her part.)
Sample: Threads on TDM#3.
Footnotes:
1 - Rosalind's age is never specified in game and, as the events of the game occur 122 attempts into trying to undo the damage she's wrought on inter-dimensional space time, it's very hard to say how long she's been at it. She's Video Game Young which means anywhere from 25-40 because modeling faces with coherent ages is hard.
2 - In 1909 she was assassinated by an intermediary on behalf of her employer, Zachary Comstock. In an attempt to make the murder look like an accident, both she and her "brother" were thrown into her multi-dimensional bridge contraption and it was sabotaged to explode. The device was engaged and backfired spectacularly, scattering both of them across "the probability space". They were forced into a quantum superposition, became neither alive nor dead, and were set firmly apart from any given reality. Also the guy who took their funeral pictures was terrible, so that was a real kick in the trousers.
3 - Robert Lutece is a variant of Rosalind from an adjacent reality who was brought over into her reality via her multi-dimensional bridge contraption. He is literally her with a slightly different chromosomal layout and more moral fortitude. For obvious reasons, she could not explain this to the cult she worked for, so she claimed he was her twin brother. They bought it. (There is much debate on whether this qualifies as 'would you date your clone' or if it is just garden variety inter-dimensional narcissism.)
4 - OOC-ly, I will point out, she is not a fighter in any capacity. She is a huge nerd who hates exercise, sweating, lifting things, and being outside. None of this will be used for combat. This is how I plan, IC-ly to nerf her stupid research. She will do research. She will try very hard to not be trapped in a jamjar. I want her to be in a jamjar. I am going to make her drop things a lot and break her vague machines she builds. This phasing will operate largely on rule of funny or for the dramatic/sad effect.
